Add Page Numbers to PDF
Stamp page numbers onto every page of a PDF — your choice of format, position, and starting number.
Add 'Page 3 of 10' style numbering (or any format you type) to a finished PDF. Choose the corner or center position, start from any number, and skip a cover page. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Your file never leaves your browser — numbering happens on your device.
How to use this calculator
- Choose the PDF to number.
- Edit the label format if you want something other than 'Page {page} of {total}'.
- Pick a position, a starting number, and whether to skip the first page.
- Click Add Page Numbers and save the stamped PDF.
The formula
The label is centered by measuring its exact width in the font: x = (page width − label width) ÷ 2 for centered positions, so a 52 pt-wide label on a 612 pt Letter page starts at x = 280.
Worked example
With the format 'Page {page} of {total}' on a 10-page document, the third page is stamped 'Page 3 of 10' — a 52 pt-wide label that sits at x = 280, y = 24 in bottom-center position on a Letter page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What formats can the label use?
Any text with the placeholders {page} and {total} — for example 'Page {page} of {total}', just '{page}', or '- {page} -'. The placeholders are replaced page by page as the file is stamped.
How do I leave the cover page unnumbered?
Tick 'Skip the first page'. Numbering then starts on the second physical page, and the total in labels like 'Page 1 of 9' counts only the numbered pages, which is what readers expect.
Can numbering start from a number other than 1?
Yes — set 'Start numbering at' to any positive number. That is useful when this PDF continues a larger document, so its first page might be page 25.
Where exactly are the numbers placed?
Bottom positions sit 24 points (about a third of an inch) above the bottom edge, with left and right positions inset 36 points from the sides. Top center sits 24 points below the top edge.
Will the numbers cover my content?
They are drawn in the margin area in a small gray 10 pt font. If your document has content right up to the bottom edge, use the top-center position instead — whichever margin is emptier on your pages.
