Rotate Image

Rotate an image in 90-degree steps and flip it horizontally or vertically, baked into the saved file.

Phone photos that come out sideways stay sideways in some apps because they rely on orientation metadata. This tool rewrites the actual pixels — rotate left or right, mirror-flip — so the saved file is correct everywhere. Done in your browser.

Your image never leaves your browser — rotation happens on your device. Unlike a viewer rotation, this bakes the new orientation into the saved file.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the image to fix.
  2. Click Rotate left or Rotate right until it looks right (each click is 90 degrees).
  3. Optionally apply a horizontal or vertical flip.
  4. Click Save Rotated Image.

The formula

Odd quarter turns (90 or 270 degrees) swap the axes: output width = original height and output height = original width. Even turns (0 or 180) keep both.

Worked example

Rotating a 4000 x 3000 landscape photo 90 degrees produces a 3000 x 4000 portrait image — the dimensions shown in the tool before you save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my photo look fine here but sideways elsewhere?

Phones store photos in one fixed orientation plus a metadata flag saying 'display rotated'. Apps that ignore the flag show the photo sideways. This tool rewrites the pixels into the true orientation, so the saved file displays correctly everywhere, flag or no flag.

What is the difference between rotate and flip?

Rotating turns the whole image like a steering wheel — the top edge moves to the side. Flipping mirrors it: a horizontal flip makes text read backwards (like a mirror), while rotation keeps text readable. The buttons here can be combined.

Does rotating swap the width and height?

Yes, on 90 and 270 degree turns: a 4000 x 3000 landscape photo becomes 3000 x 4000 portrait. The preview line shows the exact output size before you save. A 180 degree turn keeps the original dimensions.

Is quality lost when I save?

PNG files save losslessly. JPG files re-encode once at 92% quality — a single re-save at that level is visually indistinguishable from the original for normal photos.
